12 Hidden WhatsApp Features Most People Have No Idea Exist

Person using WhatsApp on smartphone

I have been using WhatsApp for years, and I only discovered half of these features last month. Some of them genuinely changed how I use the app daily.

Whether you are on Android or iPhone, these hidden tricks work on both platforms as of 2026.

1. Send Messages Without Typing a Single Word

Long press the microphone icon and swipe up to lock it. Now you can record a voice message hands-free without holding the button. But here is the real trick: before sending, tap the waveform to preview your voice message. No more embarrassing rambles sent to the wrong chat.

2. Format Text Like a Pro

Most people know about bold (*bold*) and italic (_italic_). But did you know you can also use:

  • ~strikethrough~ for crossed out text
  • ```monospace``` for code-style text
  • >quote at the start of a line for block quotes

Game changer for long messages and group discussions.

3. Pin Up to 3 Messages in Any Chat

Found an important message you keep scrolling back to find? Long press it, tap the pin icon, and choose how long to pin it: 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. You can pin up to 3 messages per chat.

4. Lock Individual Chats

Phone security and privacy lock screen

Go to any chat, tap the contact name at the top, scroll down and enable Chat Lock. That conversation disappears from your main chat list and moves to a hidden folder that requires Face ID, fingerprint, or your phone passcode to open.

5. Edit Sent Messages

Sent a typo? Long press the message within 15 minutes of sending and tap Edit. The message gets updated with a small "edited" label.

6. Send HD Photos and Videos

By default, WhatsApp compresses your media. But when you attach a photo or video, look for the HD button at the top of the screen before sending. Tap it to send in high quality.

7. Create Polls Anywhere

Tap the attachment icon and select Poll. Type your question and add up to 12 options. Works in both individual and group chats. I use this for everything.

8. Silence Unknown Callers

Go to Settings → Privacy → Calls → Silence unknown callers. This blocks calls from numbers not in your contacts. If you get a lot of spam calls, this is a lifesaver.

9. Use WhatsApp on Multiple Phones

You can link up to 4 additional devices to your WhatsApp account. Go to Settings → Linked Devices → Link a Device. Your messages sync across all devices.

10. Search Messages by Date

In any chat, tap the search icon, then tap the calendar icon to jump to messages from a specific date. Way faster than scrolling through months of conversation.

11. Transfer Chats Between Android and iPhone

Switching phones? Open WhatsApp on your old phone, go to Settings → Chats → Transfer chats. Follow the QR code process to move everything to your new device. No third-party apps needed.

12. Custom Wallpapers Per Chat

Open a chat → tap the contact name → Wallpaper. You can set a different wallpaper for each conversation.

Bonus: Scheduled Messages

When typing a message, hold the Send button to access scheduled messages (rolling out globally in 2026). Pick a date and time, and WhatsApp sends it automatically. Perfect for birthday wishes across time zones.
